Changing Sim Card but keeping the same number on O2
I’ve been a loyal O2 Pay as you Go user for over 5 years and I still believe they have the best service in the UK. When I got my iPhone I wanted to keep the same mobile number I’d been using for the past 3 years because it was an easy memorable number as well as not having the problem of telling everyone that my number had changed. I could have carried on with my old sim card but unfortunately mine was so old (when was 3 years not out of date with technology) it would not support the 3G network and would only be capable of reaching EDGE speeds. With this in mind and the fact I just bought an iPhone 3G I went and got a new O2 sim card which would support it..hopefully.
Well it did but I was still stuck with the problem of having this random new number which I didn’t want.
Step in O2′s website – https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help?qid=29&q1=22
On this simple form all you need to do is enter the last date you topped up and some numbers contained on both the new and old sim cards and that’s it. Simply wait a while, I left it overnight, then pop in your new sim card into your phone. Once O2 have made the switch your new sim card should have your old balance on it and also your old number. I tested it quickly by phoning home and vice versa to see which numbers popped up and sure enough it was my old number on a new sim card with no extra cost. Oh and your old sim card will get deactivated and no longer usable.
I thank O2 for providing this easy online free service so I don’t have to waste time or money phoning up a representative and talk for half an hour while I struggle to get my point accross. Nice one.

I did the same, but the “My Number” field at the top of “Contacts” (when accessed through the Phone App) still shows the number the SIM card shipped with. This is a pity because it is a useful feature for people like me who can never remember their own number when asked! Is this the same for you and have you found any way to change it?
Hi John,
Yes unfortunately this is the same for me and I have found no way to change it as it seems built into the sim card permanently. The solution I found is to add myself to the Contacts as “Me” with my real number. Pretty simple but whenever my friends ask I just scroll down and see it.
Thanks.
my bsnl sim got mutilated, can i buy new sim card immediately with same number.
You will be able to pick up a new sim from the carrier store (or phone them up) and change the number yes.
how do i keep my number coz im changeing my simcard from o2 pas as you go to o2 contract and i need teh same number plz some 1 help lol
Anthony: I did exactly the same thing earlier this year. Just phone up O2 and they will happily do it for you. One number I found is 08705 678678
Thanks for this, it helped me alot
but one thing i forgot to ask is: do i keep topping up with the same e-card from old sim, or do i use the new one iv received?
Ash: Unfortunately I don’t know. It may be worth asking O2 but I’d try and stick with the old one.
ok thanks anyway.
what if i want to change from orange to o2 but keep the same number. is this poss??????
Jo Mac: Yes it is possible to keep the same number. Just contact Orange and O2 to arrange it. Orange will give you a code to tell O2 to carry your number over to them.
thanks :>)
