Fieldrunners for the iPhone or iPod Touch Review
One of my favourite all time flash games is the tower defence sort. It’s just it’s customisation and ability to be different every time which amazes me. This game brings back my love of the genre and it is unstoppable! At only £2.99 from the iTunes App store I couldn’t wait to buy it and get it onto my device.
I was amazed, and it doesn’t happen easily, how much I got for the £2.99. Yeh it didn’t have tons of weapons or maps, looking back it still doesn’t, but the way the game just flowed the time passed by so quickly and I wasn’t bored at all. It is just like those flash castle defence games on the net and every time another wave of enemies comes at you, you wait and smile as they get knocked down by your illustrious defences. Your Gatling guns, or missile launch pads and the electric Tesla towers make your fortress impenetrable!
The simple control system of dragging and dropping the weapon structures is easy enough as well as the typical pinch control for zooming in or out. The graphics are clean and well drawn to a sort of cartoon effect but this doesn’t put a damper on the game as the frame rate is smooth even with 50 troops marching towards your castle. Unfortunately there are no sounds with this release so it does seem a bit too quiet for a war game unless you’re playing Eye of the Tiger in the background on your iPod. However according to the developer, proper sounds are coming to the next release so I eagerly await there arrival but also the option to turn them off as I think they may get annoying on the 99th wave of enemies… Other than that I have no quarrels, none at all! The game is well built and as a result looks great and plays great -- it does exactly what it says on the tin.
With new maps and weapons coming soon there is no reason for you not to pick this up right now. As I have said before I support the software developement of any app for the better and believe Fieldrunners can only get better. So get off those computers playing flash games and get Fieldrunners into your pocket -- it will never grow old!
